A bit of background ….
The Winuwuk Boxers were founded back in 1953 by Marion and Ivor Ward-Davies, with the kennel taking its name from a café in the pretty German town of Bad Harzburg where Marion and Ivor spent many a happy hour on honeymoon. The café was actually a meeting place for rather bohemian local artists and it was somewhere they could display their art. The name ‘Winuwuk’ is actually an acronym, of sorts, for the German phrase the artists used to describe their approach to art: “Was Ist Neu Und Weg zUr Kunst.” We have had several native German speakers try and make sense of it over the years but it’s not immediately obvious. It’s something along the lines of “what is new and the way to art”, as we said, they were quite bohemian and they did pioneer new ways of working!
Since that time, the Winuwuk name has been associated with quality show Boxers throughout the world. In common with other top kennels this success has not been achieved easily and there has been a lot of hard work, commitment, fun, heartache and joy along the way.

Café Winuwuk

Right from the start, Marion and Ivor always welcomed young helpers into their home, often sharing their dogs with them. Julie Brown and Tim Hutchings arrived at Winuwuk barely into their teens and for the last 40 years or so they have been an integral part of the kennel, as full partners in the affix. Sadly Ivor died in September 2000 and Marion died in May 2010, but the Winuwuk name goes on with Julie and Tim - just as Ivor and Marion wanted.

Although the Ward-Davies had several good winners early on and bred their first Champion as far back as 1962, it was not until they imported two great stud dogs from the United States that the success story really began. The American imports Kreyon's Back in Town of Winuwuk and Winuwuk Milray's Red Baron of Valvay were both very influential and, between them, they sired Boxers that won 70 CCs and 147 Reserve CCs. Baron was the British Boxer Club Sire of Merit in 1982.

In 2003 the Winuwuk Boxers moved house and the Boxers now live at Winuwuk Cottage in Berkeley with Julie and Tim.

'Plenty of Room to Let Off Steam'

In 2004 Marion had her 80^th birthday and the partners celebrated with a very successful night at the Annual Boxer Event where they collected an armful of the coveted British Boxer Club ‘Boscars’ awards.  Marion was also honoured with a prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. 

Misty really did lay the foundations for the large number of champions who then followed, culminating in marvellous Max, the breed record holder who set records in the breed and group rings which even we thought were impossible. His two group wins at Crufts are very special memories for us

Overall, the last few years have been phenomenally successful for the Winuwuk Boxers and in the last decade our Boxers have won all of the major awards in the UK, most of them on multiple occasions. We are also now the top winning Boxer kennel of all time in the UK, having owned/bred/campaigned more UK champions than anyone else.
